Serra Bookcase by Martelo and Mo, Oak wood close up

SOLID TIMBER AND IT'S CHARACTERISTICS

ASH

Ash's heartwood is a light to medium brown colour, though darker streaks can also be visible.

The sapwood can be quite wide and tends to be a beige or light brown.

Ash has a medium to a coarse texture similar to oak, and the grain is nearly always straight and regular, though sometimes curly or figured boards are common.

MAPLE

Unlike most hardwoods, the sapwood of Maple is commonly used rather than its heartwood.

The colour of sapwood ranges from nearly white, to an off-white cream colour, sometimes with a reddish or golden hue.

Hard Maple also displays curly or quilted grain patterns.

The grain is commonly straight but may also be wavy. The texture is even and beautiful.

OAK

The heartwood has light to medium brown colour, typically with an olive cast, though there can be a fair amount of colour diversity.

Sections display prominent ray fleck patterns.

The grain is straight, coarse and with an uneven texture. May have irregular or interlocked grain depending on growing conditions of the tree.

WALNUT

Walnut is an imported timber from North America, mainly from Canada.

The colour is creamy white on the inner region, going to a light brown to dark chocolate brown, occasionally with a purplish or reddish cast and darker streaks on the outer.

The grain is generally straight but sometimes has beautiful curly or wavy grain.
